Dear ITS Stakeholders,
I am excited to announce that this week the Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) is introducing a new name and logo for an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) initiative that is attracting growing interest and excitement across the global transportation research community.
The new name, IntelliDriveSM, is being adopted to refer to a group of ITS initiatives that offer drivers greater situational awareness of the events, potential threats, and imminent hazards within their vehicle's environment. Until now, those converging efforts have been referred to as "Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII)." In recent years, the VII program has been a major initiative of RITA's ITS Joint Program Office, and in recent months a series of VII demonstration projects, known as SafeTrip-21, have captured national attention.
We believe that the name IntelliDriveSM more effectively conveys the full potential of these technologies to enhance the safety, mobility and convenience of everyday transportation across our nation. Also, as RITA's public and private partners continue their work to advance these technologies, we believe that citizens can more easily embrace the IntelliDriveSM name, and the safer, smarter and greener transportation system it represents.
Over the coming weeks, the new name and logo will be applied to print materials and web sites to help spread the word about IntelliDriveSM. Graphic standards are also being finalized to help users appropriately and consistently apply the new name and logo to their own outreach materials.
Though its name has changed, the IntelliDriveSM program's focus remains: to develop a networked environment supporting very high speed transactions among vehicles (V2V), and between vehicles and infrastructure components (V2I) or hand held devices (V2D) to enable numerous safety and mobility applications.
I am grateful to the many external stakeholders who shared their input with our branding team in developing the IntelliDriveSM name and strengthening our shared vision of its promise.
Regards,
Paul Brubaker
