CVHS
Linking vehicles and the road
CVHS is a concept where individual vehicles communicate to exchange information both with roadside infrastructure and other individual vehicles. This is to enable greater safety and improved efficiency through the reduction of incidents, increase in capacity and better integration of the vehicle and the roadside operations. Fundamentally to the Government, it is a policy tool, which might be used, because of the potential benefits, to assist in reaching the policy goals set out in the DfT's 10 Year Transport Plan.
Highway authorities are deploying traffic management systems based on advanced information technology. At the same time vehicle on-board systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Benefits may be gained bybridging these two strands of development. CVHS could form such a bridge by using mobile communications technology to allow individual vehicles to communicate with roadside infrastructure and other vehicles. Linking vehicles and the road in this way potentially offers greater safety and improved efficiency through the reduction of incidents, increases in capacity and better integration of the vehicle and the roadside operations.
